Comparative Analysis of Prescription Abandonment Rates Between Patients Enrolled in MTM Services vs. Those Who Are Not

Background/Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare prescription abandonment rates between patients prescribed two or more chronic medications related to chronic disease states including hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia who are enrolled in medication therapy management (MTM) services compared to patients who are not enrolled in MTM services.

Methodology: This retrospective medication profile review will gather prescription abandonment information for patients with and without current enrollment in MTM services. Data will be collected from patient pharmacy records between February 1, 2017 and July 31, 2017. Matched patient controls with similar chronic medications (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, lisinopril, amlodipine, metformin, glipizide) were identified by an activity report generated through the community pharmacy_x0019_s dispensing software. Baseline characteristics will be evaluated using mean and standard deviations. The primary outcome of this study is to quantify the difference in number of times a prescription was abandoned within the patient population. Prescription abandonment is defined as _x001C_return to stock_x001D_ prescriptions which are filled, but not picked up, within 14 days. Secondary outcomes include cost associated with returning filled prescriptions to stock, and types of abandoned prescriptions. Statistical analysis will be performed to determine mean rates of the number of prescriptions abandoned between the two groups by independent t-test.

Presentation Objective: Compare the rates of prescription abandonment between patients enrolled in MTM services vs those who are not enrolled in MTM services.

Self-Assessment: Were prescription abandonment rates lower in the MTM population versus the patients who were not enrolled in MTM services?
